On Saturday, May 3, 2008, Kwanjang Wyatt hosted his annual JW Spring Classics Martial Arts Tournament, at Riverdale Baptist Senior High School, in Largo, Maryland. The event was a HUGE success, not only because of the more than 450 competitors, but because of the AWESOME competitor talent.
The stances were low and well balanced, the punches were focused, the kicks were strong and the forms had lots of power, speed and precision. This wasn't just in one or two divisions, but it was displayed throughout the whole tournament. While some of the competitors performed well doing the Creative and Extreme movements, the ones who really shined were the ones who showed the traditional movements of their style. Another reason for the great participation was that Kwanjang Wyatt tried to keep the competition prices low for those who pre-registered early. There were also special low prices for spectators. Even though there were not any huge 6 feet trophies to be given out, Kwanjang made sure that the trophies and awards were of a good quality, and that EVERONE received an award for coming out to help make this event a success. Even proud grand mothers watching their grandkids for the first time received a trophy.
Competitors from all across the Mid-Atlantic Region, including New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina, Connecticut, West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia and represented such schools and organizations like: Victory Martial Arts, Elkins Karate Center, The Avengers, The Black Belt Academy, The Shoguns, Murray's Okinawan Karate Do, American Karate Academy, Annapolis Martial Arts Academy, Black Tiger Dojang, Spirit of Excellance Martial Arts, Five Star Martial Arts Academy, Charlie Neal's Tae Kwon Do, Wong's Chinese Boxing Association, Viper Strike Tae Kwon Do, Simba Dojang, Doka II, Dojang, Full Circle Martial Arts Academy, Catholic University Tae Kwon Do Club, Blake's Universal Martial Arts, Bethany Karate Academy, Cobra Dojang, Triple Action Martial Arts, Everhart's Nippon Kenpo, Total Balance Martial Arts, Universal Korean Martial Arts Academy, Golden Sun Dojo, Dennis Brown's Shaolin WuShu Academy, David Oakley's World Champion Karate, DC Self Defense Academy, Advance Martial Arts Academy, DC Dragons, Ponders' School of Martial Arts, The Wheel Kickers, The House of Kat Sho Du, Tolson's Okinawan Karate Do, Jack Dark Tae Kwon Do, Jook Lim Tong Leong Tzee Wei Kuen, and so many more.
The day was highlighted by the appearences by such famous and well known martial artist as GRAND MASTERS FURMAN MARSHALL, MANNY AGRELLA, ROBERT McDUFFY, AL WOOD, NEIL EHRLICH, DAVID NICE, Dr. JOSEPH PARRISH, DENNIS BROWN, REGGIE JACKSON, Sr, and MELODY SEGAR, DIANE JONES, MONIQUE MARTIN, ABBY "Lady Dragon" WILSON, CLARENCE MURRAY, JEROME BAXTER, LISA SCOTT, WALLACE POWELL, DARRYL RICHARDSON, MONTEZ and NATALIE DENNIS, KEITH ELKINS, LEROY TAYLOR, BRUCE GOODWIN, Dr. CHARLES WILLIAMS, JACK DARK, BERNARD FERGUSON, SAMUEL SCOTT, JOSEPH NEAL, Sr. & Jr., JEFF BARNES, BUTCH SLAUGHTER, BRIAN CRUMB, RAYMOND WONG, ZEKE SISTRUNK, ANTHONY JACKSON, AMOS JOHNSON and a host of others.
We were also surprised with special visit from legendary GRANDMASTERS Albert Cheeks, Dr. Jim Robinson, Dr. Germon "Mama "G" Miller, and all the way from Pennsylvania, Francisco Conde.
And by the way, did we mention that, that weekend was also Kwanjang Wyatt's Birthday weekend and the 25th Anniversary of the Washington Tae Kwon Do Club?
Next year's event will be held on Saturday, May 2, at our new BIGGER location, Oxon Hill Senior School, located at 6701 Leyte Drive, in Oxon Hill, Maryland...just seconds off of the Capital Beltway.
